Chatham Health District is the local health department for the Town of Marlborough, and 5 other area towns (Colchester, East Haddam, East Hampton, Hebron, and Portland). CHD is a non-profit governmental organization that provides comprehensive public health services to our residents. The mission of Chatham Health District is to leverage community partnerships to promote, protect, and improve the health of our residents, by monitoring and investigating health concerns, preventing illness and injury, enforcing regulations, and encouraging healthy lifestyles.

Chatham Health District was established in July 2002 and is governed by a Board of Health, comprised of representatives of the 6 member towns. Day-to-day operations are managed by the Director of Health, with 12 full time staff providing a wide range of services to the 62,000 individuals who reside in the district. CHD’s services include:

  • Investigating and monitoring disease outbreaks
  • Delivering health education programs and promoting healthy behaviors
  • Administering seasonal influenza and COVID-19 vaccinations
  • Testing ticks for the bacteria that causes Lyme Disease
  • Planning for and responding to public health emergencies. 
  • Investigating and monitoring childhood lead poisonings
  • Enforcing the Connecticut Public Health Code
  • Enforcing state housing statutes
  • Licensing and inspecting restaurants and other food service establishments
  • Licensing and inspecting hair and nail salons
  • Reviewing and approving subdivision and building plans involving septic systems and wells
  • Bacterial testing of recreational water in designated public swimming areas
  • Inspecting pools, campgrounds, and day cares
